Beltway 2070 — Aesthetic
Aesthetic
The campaign reads in two senses at once: visual and sonic. Both are stratified, both move, and both encode politics.
Visual
The Beltway is bright at the top and dark at the bottom. Upper-Beltway corp towers, sky-bridges, and executive zones are over-lit, brand-saturated, sterile, ARM-secured. Lower-Beltway street level, salt-stained sub-basements, and drowned-street tunnels are dim, scavenged, mesh-graffitied. The lighting tells you where you are.
Going down visually equals going underground politically. Set-piece imagery: rappelling from a CHEG sky-bridge into a flooded subway tunnel. Climbing out of the salt-stained Roots and into the marbled lobby of a Hopkins clinic. Walking the bay floor and looking up at the wreck of the Aegis.
All five corp brands are visible somewhere. CHEG and Argus are omnipresent — utility and surveillance touch every street. PMG, ARM, and Hopkins are visible at specific sites: factories, patrol vehicles, clinics, sleeve dealerships.
Argus wears the eye. A single stylized iris — the Argus mark — appears on every camera, every sensor pole, every transit kiosk, every smart surface. Once you notice the eye, you start seeing it everywhere. Truth #2's "eye that never sleeps" is literal: the Beltway is wallpapered in Argus iris glyphs.
The bay reads differently. The drowned Chesapeake is light at the water surface and dark below; lit by morning, by storms, by smart-paper lanterns strung between flotillas. There are no Argus eyes on the bay. There is also no power grid you can trust.
The polarity that matters
The Beltway has no acoustic instruments. The corps killed them. Synthesis is total. The bay does have acoustic instruments. A guitar, a violin, a đàn tranh, a banjo — these are political objects in 2070. The Lavender Troupe famously brings acoustic instruments to Beltway gigs as performance. ARM has cited them for "unlicensed cultural artifacts" more than once.
When a session opens in the bay, somebody is humming. When a session opens in the Beltway, somebody is broadcasting.
