Annandale Koreatown — the Pike

The DC metro's de facto Koreatown — real-world Annandale, VA. Locally called the Pike (from Little River Turnpike, a real local nickname). K-pop morph fashion, club culture, hackerspace overlap, queer arts. In 2070, K-pop aesthetic has gone fully mainstream and Annandale has grown into a cultural hub. The Pike is what people travel through the Beltway to experience.

Role in the world

Annandale builds and protects a cultural commons. The Pike is a free zone within the Beltway — not free of corp presence, but free in the daily texture of life. The community resists surveillance and ARM intrusion through neighborhood density and a cultural shield: club culture, the noraebang economy, K-pop bass leaking through every wall after dark.

The current visible project is establishing a permanent off-grid mesh node beneath the Hwangsa Noraebang — a Free Stack-Annandale joint project that would give the Pike its own free communication layer.

Public faces

  • Park Min-jae (박민재) — mid-20s, queer, Lavender Troupe + Free Stack-adjacent. Privately Minjae, in the clubs DJ M.J. Runs underground morph fashion shows and Lavender Troupe nights. Their own modded sleeves are works of art and protest, and they are the Pike's standing link to the Troupe and the Free Stack.
  • Han Mi-kyung (한미경) — 50s. Third generation on the Pike; the family import business outlived the Drowning because it was never large enough to be worth taking. Dresses Min-jae's morph fashion shows and keeps wardrobe and props for the Lavender Troupe's touring productions, which means she and her trunk go wherever the show goes. Customers and younger performers call her Han sajangnim (사장님); Sable, who has known her twenty years, calls her Mi-kyung. Brisk, kind, reading glasses on a chain, a tape measure she never puts down.

Allies and friction

  • Allies: the Lavender Troupe (deeply entangled — Min-jae is the bridge); the Free Stack (heavy overlap through Min Studio); informally with the Sangam
  • Friction with: ARM patrols who occasionally raid clubs
  • Enemies: ARM (regular harassment); Hopkins (would love to dictate morph fashion compliance); Argus (surveils heavily but with limited returns due to community density)

Where they operate

  • Hwangsa Noraebang (황사 — Yellow Dust): multi-floor karaoke bar and Lavender Troupe venue. Private rooms upstairs serve as Troupe meeting rooms. "We're getting room 12" is code for resistance business.
  • The Mok-yok-tang (목욕탕): bathhouse / jjimjilbang. Known neutral ground: no weapons, no corp surveillance — steam and tile play hell with most sensor packages. The only place to have a real conversation sometimes.
  • Min Studio: Free Stack-aligned morph atelier. Turns cheap CHEG worker-grade sleeves into K-pop-aesthetic statement pieces; jailbreaks the firmware while they're at it.
  • The Pike: Little River Turnpike's commercial strip; neon Hangul signage layered over older English signs; night markets that never fully close.

A note on cultural ground

Annandale is real, and it is the real DC metro Koreatown. The 2070 version is an extrapolation. 황사 (hwangsa) is the real Korean term for the dust storms from China and Mongolia and carries climate-disaster resonance. 목욕탕 (mogyoktang) renders here as mok-yok-tang for table-reading ease.
